Evaluation- Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Firstly, our media product
represents the female social group. We do this by having all female cast and
this really portrayed the strong feminist image which we were going for. This
contradicts the typical thriller cast, however this will make for a more
interesting film and therefore might entice a more particular audience. The
benefits of our media product representing the female social group is it
represents powerful women and shows how strong women are which is a common area
of interest among society in today’s time. Additionally, this makes it
relatable to a more variety of audience but also touches a more specific
audience type meaning it could have either a niche or a mass audience.
My media product also represents
a teenage social group. Similarly, this social group takes up a large portion
of the global population and society has perceived it to have a mostly negative
image. This is something we have challenged. Our main character April is the
stereotypical nerd but this is good because it shows not all teenagers are
troublesome and lack intelligence which is perceived by society as bad. April
is very similar to the character of Yael played by Jamie Bloch in Netflix series
‘Degrassi: Next Class’. Both April and Yael represent the stereotypical school
nerd image and therefore this shows we are adhering to stereotypes. Our media
product aims to beat the negative image given by society of teenagers and show
them we aren’t all the stereotypical alcoholic, partying youths who hate
school. This is important as it makes a statement and challenges stereotype.
Another one of our characters ‘Poppy’
is very similar to the character of Frankie Hollingsworth played by Sara
Waisglass also from Degrassi: Next Class. Both Poppy and Frankie play roles of
innocent siblings who worry for their siblings and their siblings’ well fair.
Although their stories differ a lot; Poppy is dealing with her sister going
missing and Frankie with her sibling being in a mental institution, they both
portray images of a distress as a result of their siblings’ situations. This
presents that the character of Poppy adheres to stereotype as she follows a
similar character of one in the real media.
