Props and Costume analysis

Props
  • Red van- This symbolises April's disappearance because its the crucial object which is present during her disappearance and its open to the audience's own interpretations as to where they believe she's gone during the opening.
  • The News Report- This is really important in the opening as it defines how the disappearance has affected April's family and tells the audience there is a global search for April.
  • April's phone- This was featured in the first showings of April as it was the thing that almost caused her disappearance and the phone call she had with her friend made her leave her house and then she disappeared.
Costumes

We have chosen for April to be dressed like this because its quite a typical teenage look like she is meant to be portrayed as. Also we didn't want to over dress her because she is meant to appear quite normal and not particularly significant until her disappearance and we thought if we overdressed her we would give things away which we don't we the audience to know.

The Investigator
  • Black jacket
  • Black blouse
  • Black trousers
  • Heavy dark make up
We wanted the investigator to be dressed like this as we wanted her to appear kind of scary and intimidating and we felt the best way to do this was through the use of dark clothes and make up. 

The News Reporter
  • White top
  • Blue dungaree dress
  • Black tights
  • Court heeled shoes
We left it up to Miss Court to decide on her attire due to practicality issues and limited time. She choose something which presented the image of a newsreader really well which was pleasing.

Friends and family of April
  • Jeans
  • Leggings
  • Checker shirt
  • T-shirts
  • Scarfs
  • Anything comfortable
We chose to do this because its meant to be set in a home setting and we also wanted the family and friends to seem as ordinary as possible and make it more realistic. Additionally, it would emphasis how ordinary the family and friends of April are and therefore what a normal life she would've had.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My media product is the opening of a thriller film. We chose the story line of the disappearance of a teenage girl. This uses a typical storyline of a thriller film. We did this because it was a storyline which we could use and develop with the support of additional resources. This idea was inspired by BBC 1 series ‘The Missing’ in which a girl returns after she went missing.   A way in which we developed the storyline through the use of other resources is by incorporating the idea of a red van. This was initially my idea which was expanded on by the rest of the group. Key Moment of Suspense from the Sixth Sense- 1

Composition Ambient lighting is used because it make the scene very dark which helps to make the atmosphere appear more eerie. Additionally, Cole is wearing little white pants and a white vest. White is usually associated with the theme of innocence and therefore foreshadows when something bad happens in the upcoming clips, he will be the victim. Another aspect to build up suspense is the red tent. Red is associated with the theme of danger which again could foreshadow what is going to happen in the upcoming scenes. A clip that effectively builds up suspense is when you can see Cole's breath, this shows it is cold and makes the scene feel tense and also that his shoulders are hunched shows he is frightened. Camera Angles A medium longshot is used to portray Cole with his bedroom in the background and this is where you get the first insight of his red tent. Then there is a medium longshot of Cole going to the toilet. This is used to show how Cole is oblivious to what is going on
